Sibaltan – Escape from the Modern World

From Coron, we took a ferry to El Nido.  We decided on the slow ferry because it was cheaper (1200 pesos each $24), and the lady selling the ticket assured us it should only take 5 hours.  It ended up taking 7.5 hours which only caused issue because we were trying to catch a van to the east side of the island.  Though it did not look it, both of us thought the ferry ride was pretty comfortable.  Once in El Nido, we struggled for a little while to find wifi, but a nice hotel let us use theirs.  Jeanette found another van to take us where we needed to go – Erlitop Garden (hotel) near Sibaltan.
Sibaltan is a small town on the east side of the Palawan Island across from El Nido.  Our accomodation had very spotty wifi at best and only had power from 5pm to 11pm, but the bed was comfortable and the bugs were not a problem.  Also, food options were scarce, but we found enough to eat.  We stayed 3 nights there.

We went on 2 tours while there.  The first was more snorkling and swimming at pretty beaches, which ended up getting both of us sunburnt. We both agreed we saw the most clear ocean water of our trip (and lives) here.

The second tour was an evening tour we took the next day. It took us to see a neat limestone cave then a local village and once the sun set a boat ride through the mangrove trees that were filled with fireflies under a star filled sky.

After leaving here, we had 3 more nights before our next flight out of Puerto Princesa to Cebu. We spent 2 in Port Barton and the final in Puerto Princesa. I’ve included a few photos from those days but mostly we were hiding from the sun.

Our guides were always troll fishing between islands. They caught 3 tuna on this trip.

Jeanette was very excited to see this baby goat

A washed up puffer fish

The evening was the only time we dared to venture to the beach

Apparently the only chance we’d ever get to try fresh fried calamari for $4… I tried 2 bites.
