We flew into Stavanger (Stah Vaughn Grr) to begin our camping tour of Norway. We were concerned that the rental car would not fit our luggage but we were pleasantly surprised with a Mercedes-Benz station wagon and an automatic instead of the manual Ford Focus that we had ordered (to save money). The temperature has been pleasant – somewhere between 55 and 80 degrees. The sun shines from about 3:30 a.m. to 11 p.m with twilight in between. The only star you can see is Venus. Thank god Jeanette brought eye masks.
Due to the costs, we have so far eaten all our meals from the grocery store. The tiny camping stove and pots Mika and Kenny brought has gotten a lot of appreciated use. And I was happy to find some off brand Cornflakes 7.90 Krone (just under $1 ).
One cool thing about Norway is that you are free to camp anywhere that doesn’t have a fence and is not within 150 meters of an inhabited building. We did pay to camp the first night so that we can have showers and Wi-Fi but the second night we got to experience our first night of free camping along one of the many deserted highways of Norway.
Our first hike was Pulpit Rock that ended at a 600 meter high sheer cliff overlooking a fjord. The total horizontal distance there and back was 7.2 km. I’ll get to you next from Bergen.
